US Considers Requiring Banks to Collect Citizenship Data

(MENAFN) The US government is reportedly weighing measures that would require banks to collect more detailed information on customers’ citizenship to address illegal immigration, as stated by reports.

Officials are considering an executive order that could compel banks to gather such data from all clients and may require additional documentation, like a passport, to verify citizenship, according to a source familiar with the matter.

People aware of the administration’s plans note that details of any potential order or related steps have not been finalized. It is unclear whether the directive would only mandate more detailed reporting or could extend to closing accounts of individuals unable to provide the necessary documents.

The White House declined to comment on the proposed immigration-related executive order.

Another source indicated that Treasury Department officials are exploring measures to restrict undocumented immigrants’ access to bank accounts.

“Any reporting about potential policymaking that has not been officially announced by the White House is baseless speculation," White House spokesman Kush Desai said.
